The Big Duck
Have you ever been on The Big Duck boat? Ever wondered what it’s like being out on the water?
If you’ve never been out on the water in your own backyard, you need to go for a boat ride and see the beauty for yourself! This adventure begins as you board The Big Duck from the Causeway to Granite Island. You’ll get to explore the waters around the back of the Island itself, out to Seal Rock and West Island, where long-nosed fur seals and sealions haul out. Members from the Kangaroo Island/Victor Harbor Dolphin Watch group will be on board to help you spot dolphins as you go and learn all about the resident pod.
Granite Island Tour
Most locals walk around Granite Island frequently, as it is such a beautiful place. However, there is probably a lot you don’t know about the Island. Did you know that the area near the Café was once a quarry, and the quarried stones were used to build the breakwater to create a safe harbour for ships?
We all know that our little penguin population has drastically reduced over the last 20yrs, to barely 16 penguins from over 1,000. Join us on a guided tour as we explore the Island and discover how we can care for the little penguins and help them to increase their population in conjunction with volunteers from Friends of Granite Island Recreation Park.
Snorkelling
Ever wanted to go snorkelling in your backyard, but not sure where to go or don’t want to go alone? In this session Beyond the Classroom will take you snorkelling (all gear provided!) to explore your local reefs. A marine biologist from Fleurieu Marine Education will be there to help you discover the inhabitants.
Beachcombing
Love to walk on the beach and discover what gets washed ashore? Join a marine biologist from Fleurieu Marine Education to explore the beach and learn all about the marine life that gets washed up. If you don’t already know about Hooded Plovers, a vulnerable beach-nesting bird, we’ll also discover how we can help these birds out and maybe become Plover Lovers as well!
Bushwalking
Have you explored the sections of the Heysen Trail that start in your backyard? They Heysen Trail is the longest dedicated walking trail in Australia, starting at Cape Jervis and going all the way to the top of the Flinders Ranges. It winds along beaches and cliffs on our south coast and the scenery is spectacular!
We’ll be hiking with Elise Lavers from Enliven Outdoor Adventures departing from Waitpinga, only a 20min drive from Victor Harbor. If you’ve never hiked this section of coast before, you need to take this opportunity to see the beauty for yourself! National Parks Volunteers will join you on the walk to provide insight into their roles and share their passion for conservation.
